Trends in the Paradise Flycatcher, Ruddy Kingfisher, and Fairy Pitta While the exact nationwide population is unknown, estimates based on research and Red Data Books suggest the following: Species Estimated Breeding Population in Japan Ruddy Kingfisher Approximately 2,000–5,000 individuals (1,000–2,500 pairs) Fairy Pitta Approximately 100–1,000 individuals Paradise Flycatcher Approximately 10,000–30,000 individuals The Fairy Pitta, in particular, is extremely rare, with some estimates placing its population in Japan at only 50–1,000 individuals. Its main breeding grounds are Kochi Prefecture, southern Kyushu, the Kii Peninsula, and parts of Shikoku. On the other hand, while the Paradise Flycatcher can be found in forests throughout the country, its distribution is localized, and its breeding density is low. It is thought to be considerably more numerous nationwide than the Fairy Pitta. The Ruddy Kingfisher breeds from Hokkaido to Kyushu, but in reality, it inhabits limited mountainous areas, and its population is not very large. In some regions, the number of breeding individuals is considered extremely small. Looking only at the Kinki region, the figures are as follows: Fairy Pitta → several dozen to 100 individuals Ruddy Kingfisher → several hundred individuals Paradise Flycatcher → several thousand individuals This is based on surveys by the Wild Bird Society and the impressions of birdwatchers. Regarding Hyogo Prefecture, it is currently more likely that Ruddy Kingfishers breed more widely than Fairy Pittas, and Paradise Flycatchers are thought to be even more numerous. In the Rokko Mountains and the mountains of northern Osaka where I live, there is almost no indication of Ruddy Kingfishers or Fairy Pittas breeding. However, I don't know about western Harima in Hyogo Prefecture, but if we limit ourselves to the area closer to Osaka, I haven't seen any traces of Ruddy Kingfishers or Fairy Pittas breeding, at least from my perspective. However, I have seen Paradise Flycatchers breeding in the mountains of northern Osaka. Next, regarding cormorants of Fairy Pittas and Ruddy Kingfishers, I have witnessed both breeding at Sasayama Forest Park. The possibility of breeding increases north of the Tanba Sasayama Forest. In Tajima, there are definitely places where the Fairy Pitta and Ruddy Kingfisher breed. My perspective on observing wild birds is based on the following four points: 1) the first one seen that year, 2) the last one seen that year, 3) the rare one (endangered species), and 4) the unusual one (unusual behavior or form). When you search for and explore wild birds, you discover many different kinds. As these discoveries accumulate, you come to feel that the birds and the places where they live are irreplaceable and wonderful. And you begin to think of them as places that must be preserved for future generations, places that cannot be left alone. Our motto is the three principles of nature: exploration, discovery, and not leaving things alone.
