Official history doesn't directly confirm the existence of star fortresses, but it also doesn't deny their existence, preferring to avoid explaining the matter. The vague explanations of official historians, based only on the most famous star bastions, as well as the desire to uncover the truth about this phenomenon, have given rise to many alternative explanations about the origins of all star fortresses, and most importantly, their purpose. And now we have a multitude of theories, from counter-battery warfare in the Middle Ages to frequency resonance for the generation of hydrogen and atmospheric electricity, as well as about a hundred other theories. One can endlessly speculate based on ancient maps and archival documents, which sometimes contradict each other, especially when trying to project the purpose of one fortress onto all of them. However, one can't lump everything together. Each fortress has its own purpose and goal. And today, we attempted to understand the purpose of one such star fortress in the Bryansk region. The official name of this place is "Krápepásnýe ávály" (Fortress Fortress), official status: historical, local significance. There are several official explanations for this mysterious place: 1. The first mention of Pochep is contained in the "Brief Volyn Chronicle" and dates back to 1500. It is known that the fortress was built on the site of an older settlement. New earthen fortifications in Pochep were completed in October 1535. The perimeter walls extended over 1.5 kilometers, resting on a high earthen rampart, with a deep ditch dug in front. The fortress had four gates: to Starodub, Mglin, Trubchevsk, and Smolensk. 2. The modern pentagonal ramparts are the remains of a huge earthen fortress erected by order of Peter the Great in 1706-1707 to defend Pochep from the Swedes during the Northern War. The fortress was a powerful and well-designed earthen fortification, with earthen ramparts extending approximately 1.5 kilometers. The fortress's design is a pentagon with five square bastions at the corners. The entrance to the fortress is protected by two bastions. The fortress was also connected to the city by a dam. 3. In 1720, Menshikov founded an earthen city on the left bank of the Sudost River, near the Petrovskaya Vala Fortress, naming it "Alexandropol." It housed the central administration of the Pochep volost and all economic institutions. By 1727, it contained two rows of stone buildings, consisting of 26 residential chambers, eight trading shops beneath them, and three cellars. The city lasted only 10 years.
