Hand Carving Lilies
We were asked, as a part of the statue restoration, to carve lilies for St. Dominic to hold. These were loosely modeled off another staff of lilies we were asked to repair for a statue of Saint Joseph in the same church (Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Somerset, Ohio). When we are going to paint a carving, we generally opt for basswood, as we did here. This statue is one of a pair for the high altar, and these lilies help balance St. Dominic with St. Catherine, who stands at the other end of the reredos.
