It is the capital and most populated municipality of the Province of Segovia. It is located at the confluence of the Eresma rivers first with the Ciguiñuela and then with the Clamores, at the foot of the Guadarrama mountain range. The city is famous for its historic buildings including three main landmarks: its midtown Roman aqueduct, its cathedral (one of the last ones to be built in Europe following a Gothic style), and the medieval castle, which served as inspiration for Walt Disney's Cinderella Castle. The old city and the aqueduct were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985. The aqueduct is considered the most important Roman civil engineering work in Spain and is one of the most significant and best preserved monuments of Ancient Rome in the Iberian Peninsula. The Alcázar of Segovia, a royal palace situated on a rock between the Eresma and Clamores rivers, is first documented in 1122, although it may have existed before. It was one of the favorite residences of the kings of Castile, built in the transition from Romanesque to Gothic, and in which the Mudejar decoration of its large halls stands out. The Cathedral of Santa María and San Frutos is the last Gothic cathedral built in Spain. It is considered the masterpiece of Basque-Castilian Gothic and is known as "The Lady of the Cathedrals".
