Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Modell 964 - Bestandsaufnahme Motorinstandestzung Teil 1 | Redhead

Join Redhead Cylinder Head and Engine Technology as they overhaul the engine of a Porsche 911, Model 964 C2. Built in 1990, air-cooled, 3.6 liters, 250 real hp. The car once came to us for an engine check because it was leaking oil and sputtering even when cold. The preliminary diagnosis and our suspicions from back then surprised the owner, but they didn't stop him from getting his Carrera, which he had purchased new in 1990, back in working order. It's not his only Porsche today, but it was his first new purchase over 30 years ago. So we'll take a look at the car. I, too, have fond memories. These are precisely the models I was able to drive again and again as a young man in my early twenties, even if I probably didn't really master them. I drove them as C2s and C4s and, due to my job, had regular access to them to sweeten my weekends, while back then, of course, my second heart belonged to the American V8s. While I was used to jerky rear axles in muscle cars, which were somehow forced to settle with traction bars and stabilizers, my experience with the Porsche was completely different. The C2 could drive straight through corners and push from behind, while the C4 pulled the car like it was on rails. However, the breaking points felt later, but the moment traction was lost was much more brutal. While we're writing about handling here, the Americans were doing what they wanted. You had to somehow feel it with their soft power steering, without any connection to the road. The Porsche's handling was several leagues higher. It's really incomparable. It would simply be like comparing a sports boat to a harbor tug. The Porsches in this series were the first cars for me where ripping through the gears while accelerating on winding roads with rapid shifting, the simultaneous monitoring of traction, and the fear of tearing apart a new car, created complications. Quick shifting with just one hand on the steering wheel when the car is "flying." Concentration! Paddle shifts? Ridiculous! These little beasts have an awesome sound and you can hear the beast in the rear. They put pressure on when the revs come into play. Of course, I also respect a 997 or later models. Obviously, they are faster. But the C2 is much more fun. Honestly! You can feel the thing. The instruments are the same size, anyway, the only interesting things are the oil temperature and the rev counter. You feel the rest. Gggrrrrrrrr, roooaaahhh. Purist and yet the car has good brakes, the car is safe and you can feel it. One of the last 911s that combines puristism with a certain technical modernity. The older Porsches get, the more venomous and unruly they become. Wonderful! Depending on what you're looking for, they're more and more fun. But if you no longer need driving stress, the 964 even has both. A really good car in my opinion. I like them! And the newer the models selected, the more you have to invest in the car to give it back the Porsche flair of the airboxers. To practically develop it back, as far as the perceived adrenaline is concerned. And it's not always about 0 to 100 or lap times! The newer models are always the winners. Provided you can handle the driving machines. You have to learn and keep practicing. They all manage the first swerve, when the car breaks away, but the second time the thing usually ends up in the bushes like an old fighter-bomber! Or they can drive the beast out of Stuttgart! Just ask Mr. Röhrl, I believe that after his wife and family these vehicles are his elixir of life and the reason he stays young. In these difficult times in Europe, let us hope that our national governments also stay young in spirit and shed the stubbornness of aging politicians. Find the courage to speak up. Stand up for one another and put the common good before self-interest. But also have understanding for the other side. We'll never know the whole truth, and we must remain open-minded, always seeking peaceful solutions. Wars bring so much infinite suffering. No war is excusable for the civilian population! They, and the soldiers, ultimately have to mourn the victims for the greed and recklessness of those who order war but don't take a bullet themselves. We must now recapture the Porsche's horsepower. Once they're back in the stable, things will get going. Man, if only it were running...grrrrrrr, roooaaaahhhh....
