A line has been drawn down the center of town where settlers and ranchers have reached an uneasy truce. The delicate peace is inadvertently broken when a group of new settlers moves into the ranchers' side of town, upsetting the delicate balance that had existed until then and triggering all-out war between the farmers, who want the land tamed and property lines drawn, and the cowboys, who want the prairies open for their cattle to roam. Randolph Scott is rock solid in his portrayal of a modest but moral man who acts as a moderating influence between three distinct groups—ranchers, farmers, and traders—in a frontier town. Each has its own agenda, and the most seductive lure for Scott on the bad side of town is the brash but captivating saloon singer, Ann Dvorak, in one of the best performances of her career. She's so fresh and sexy in her various numbers that I can believe an entire room full of cowboys would sit silently, mouths agape, watching her dance and flirt to her songs. I don't know if her voice was her own or dubbed, but she could certainly pronounce those lyrics! There isn't a dull or superfluous scene in the film, with many well-chosen characters, fights It's full of punches, shootouts, a cattle stampede, romance, comedy, and top-notch film noir lighting and dialogue for those who care. And on top of all that, I didn't realize until my third viewing that Scott's horse follows him on foot like a pet dog. Very subtle, it never became a focal point for the director, one of those veterans who had the sense to let the audience find their own points of interest. I think it's a classic.
