The Plumstead Ripper: South London's Hidden Predator Who Targeted Mothers

For years, South London lived in fear as a serial predator targeted young mothers walking through parks with their children. Again and again, one name surfaced: Robert Napper. His own mother contacted police after he confessed to an attack, neighbors recognized him from a police sketch, and investigators even searched his apartment after he was arrested on unrelated charges. Yet detectives repeatedly dismissed him, even eliminating him as a suspect because they believed he was too tall. Instead, police became convinced they had found Rachel Nickell's killer in Colin Stagg, an eccentric local man whose interests in paganism and the occult made him an easy target. An infamous undercover sting operation tried to trick Stagg into confessing, but despite months of manipulation, he never admitted to a crime he didn't commit. The case against him eventually collapsed, while the real attacker continued stalking and murdering victims across South London. Everything changed after Robert Napper murdered Samantha Bisset and her four-year-old daughter in 1993, leaving behind fingerprints that finally identified him as the Green Chain Rapist. Even then, detectives investigating Rachel Nickell's murder failed to connect him to their case until advances in DNA testing proved he was responsible more than a decade later.
