So the first question we can ask ourselves is: are you going to sing over an instrumental track, a song that already exists? If it's a cover, you'll have to respect a certain framework established by the original artist. This means you'll have to analyze what's in the song. Is there an intro? If so, how long is the intro? Is it one bar, two bars, four bars? How long should I count before starting and adding my vocals? So it's really important that you establish the structure and figure out how long you need to wait, because on a beat, when there's no vocal from the original artist, you never know when to come back in. Then, you can have fun marking reference points on the original track. You can identify certain sounds and know that at that point you should play the chorus, for example. So it's helpful to note these reference points, to get used to hearing them clearly. Then you'll have these reference points on your beat without the vocals from the original artist. Now, if it's a composition, that means there's an artist, a producer, who has created an instrumental track for you, and you'll be able to add your vocals to it. So, what you need to do is, first of all, you need to establish a kind of framework to know which direction you're going to take. Is it something fast-paced or something slow? Are you going to take your time with the words, unfolding your sentences calmly, or is it something where you're going to be in machine-gun mode and deliver your flow very quickly? So, you need to establish this clearly and really grasp the pulse of the beat because it's important that you're in sync with the dynamics of the instrumental. Otherwise, you'll be completely out of sync, and it won't work. So, that's the first thing: really grasp the pulse to know how fast you're going to move with this beat. Then, as I explained earlier, in the case of a cover, you can establish your own structure. That is, do I want to use my chorus often, or maybe only once, and for the rest of the song, it will be a flow of lyrics, verses, just one verse after another? Do you want to alternate between sections? Perhaps in the instructions you were given, there are breaks. Do you want to use these breaks, for example, to change your vocal style or to deliver more lyrics and move into improvisation mode? It's important to identify these points. So, you take the instrumental, you listen to it, you analyze it. The first minute is rather calm, so I'm going to settle in like this. In the second minute, there's a break. I notice a little kick drum at one point, which tells me that things are about to get a bit more intense in terms of the percussion. So, you'll be able to really get into your lyrics then.
