Crossing The Raging Current Cut in Eleuthera Bahamas.
Crossing The Raging Current Cut in Eleuthera Bahamas. The Current Cut Eleuthera is a narrow channel located in the Bahamas. The pointed tips of Eleuthera and the adjacent Current Island are only about 90-meters apart. This meeting of the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea is treacherous for boaters who can be swept onto the rocks by the powerful current running between the deep ocean and the shallow sea. Most boats will only attempt this crossing during the very brief slack tide, when there is no movement of water in either direction. The surging current met us head-on as we approached Current Cut in the very rough Atlantic seas. We held our breath as we attempted to cross the raging water. The diving in this part of The Bahamas is among the most diverse in the region. The most spectacular dive site, judged among the 10 top dives in the world, is the Current Cut Dive. The incredibly fast dive involves descending into the quick-moving flow racing between the rock walls that define the underwater chasm between two islands. Swept up with schools of stingrays, mako sharks, and reef fish, divers are propelled along one kilometer (2/3 mile) of underwater distance in less than 10 minutes. In this episode we say goodbye to Spanish Wells at Eleuthera. We’ve been here almost a month and have gotten to know the island and many of its people well. Spanish Wells is a fishing town, the waterside docks and marina stores dot the small downtown. We spent hours walking through this area and fell in love with the historic, throwback nature. But it’s now time to head further south. We’ve been looking forward to Exuma, our next destination. Spanish Wells in December has proven to be a little to chilly for Monica, and to windy for Sea Star. The Exumas will be warmer and the weather should be a little more settled. But as we find out, rough seas and bad weather seem to follow us. And we continue to learn its lessons. 00:00 Introduction 00:18 Leaving Spanish Wells 02:46 Raging Current Cut, Breathing Again 05:51 Current Island and on the way to Exuma 09:29 Allan's Cay, Exuma, Bahamas Thank you so much for watching!
