Around 1751, during the Carnatic Wars, the Nawab of Arcot is said to have brought 12 Turkish Muslim soldiers to fight in the region. These 12 soldiers were known for their devotion and discipline. Although their side won the battle, the soldiers were reportedly beheaded near Gandavaram, close to Nellore. According to legend, their headless bodies rode back on their horses to the place where the Bara Shaheed Dargah now stands. They were buried there, and the shrine was built in their memory. This act gradually evolved into Rottela Panduga, where people exchange rotis while praying for wishes such as marriage, employment, education, children, health, prosperity, or visas.
