In the engine wreck, there is a so-called module (unit) consisting of the EGR unit, along with the EGR cooler, and an oil cooler mounted on top of it. As a result, this entire unit appears as a single unit from one side, and is located in the engine wreck at the top. We have repeatedly filmed videos focusing on this unit, as it is where common problems occur, such as antifreeze and oil leaks. Antifreeze can leak from under the oil cooler gasket or through the EGR radiator (heat exchanger) gasket. Engine oil typically leaks from under the oil cooler gasket. This component is a common culprit for these leaks. This video discusses a rare problem where we encountered a drop in EGR radiator (heat exchanger) flow rate that affected engine performance, ultimately causing the system to operate in a limited mode. Based on the initial symptoms, our diagnostician recommended replacing the EGR valve. However, replacing it didn't help. So, immediately assuming the EGR radiator was clogged wasn't entirely obvious. To determine the cause for certain, we conducted tests on the same vehicle with the same engine and measured operating parameters in various modes, such as mass air flow, and compared them with the faulty engine. We all know that under certain operating conditions, such as cruising or idling, the EGR valve can be slightly or fully open, allowing some exhaust gases to enter the intake. This means that with the EGR valve open or slightly open, fresh air flow will be reduced. If, under identical conditions, we see a higher fresh air flow on a particular engine, we can assume the EGR system is clogged. This means either the valve can't open fully, it's clogged with soot, or the EGR cooler is clogged. As a result, the system detects abnormal MAF sensor readings and generates an EGR error. Technicians and service technicians should keep in mind that clogged EGR coolers can occur, and not always due to malfunctioning of the EGR valve itself. In our example, the problem was the EGR cooler, which was clogged with soot. This is something to keep in mind, as vehicles like the Range Rover L322 with a 4.4 TD diesel engine are getting older, and more and more of them are reaching 10 years of age, with mileage reaching 300,000 km or more. Therefore, a clogged EGR cooler could very likely be the cause of EGR system malfunction in this diesel engine. Keep this in mind!
