If you appreciate our original approach, share it. Description, presentation, ecosystem origin: Aglaonema is a genus of plants that includes about 60 species, and in recent years, dozens of varieties have been flooding garden centers. Its family, the Araceae, includes Philodendron, Dieffenbachia, Alocasia, Caladium, Monstera, Arum, Anthurium, Spathiphyllum, and Zantedeschia. It is a genus native to Asia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and the Philippines in tropical regions. Its preferred ecosystem is the very humid tropical forest, where it's very hot and the sunlight is filtered. Contrary to the well-known belief that the more sophisticated and colorful it is, the more difficult it is, but no! Quite the opposite! Undemanding and very hardy, it's an ideal plant for our interiors and is surprisingly easy to care for. Pollution-removing plant??? Controversy and bad advice... While it has been demonstrated in certain American studies (Wolverton studies for NASA in 1980) that certain plants are capable of capturing air pollutants such as VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) and other forms of formaldehyde, xylene, and benzene, the main culprits of our indoor pollution, a French program called "PHYTAIR" has demonstrated certain purification capabilities of plants, including Scindapsus, in non-domestic premises. Today, ADEME (French Agency for Environmental Protection and Management) studied in 2011 and does not validate the depolluting capacity of certain plants in light of indoor pollution levels. Sciences et vies after an in-depth study. https://www.science-et-vie.com/nature... • The leaves are loose, sheathing, lanceolate or oval, and borne on long petioles. • In Aglaonema, the flowering is discreet, with insignificant spadices that bear a greenish-white or cream-colored spathe (spadix) and bract (spatha). • The stems are erect or short and creeping. Aglaonema (Aglaonema) is a versatile houseplant appreciated for its decorative patterns. It easily finds a place anywhere in the home. The best-known species is Aglaonema commutatum (a very hardy species), from which dozens of varieties have been imported from Thailand by breeders (creators). These often magnificent varieties are taxed at several euros! This significantly impacts the retail price in stores. History and Discovery: Aglaonema comes from the Greek words "agláos," meaning superb (brilliant), and "néma," meaning thread, the name alluding to the beautiful leaf pattern. The first written records date back to 1704, with an article by Camellus, a Jesuit priest from the Philippines. Cultivation and Use: This is an especially interesting indoor plant for our homes because it requires little light and very little maintenance. It thrives in subdued light and does not tolerate full sun. Avoid forced electric heating and drafts in winter. Aglaonema does not tolerate cold and its comfortable temperature is between 18 and 24°C. Never leave the plant exposed to temperatures below 14°C. Grow it in a pot indoors in a bright room without direct sunlight. In summer, in the garden in a shady area. Remember to bring it indoors before fall and don't be caught out by the first cool nights! Care during the winter, it enters a dormant period and its needs are simple. A temperature of 16°C is sufficient; avoid overheated rooms or direct proximity to a radiator. Toxicity: Like many araceae, Aglaonema is a toxic plant. Propagation: • Division: Care, fertilization, watering: Repotting: every 2 years. Fertilization: Nitrogen-based green plant fertilizer for beautiful foliage. Temperature: 20°C. Regular but moderate watering. Misting. Tip: Remove flowers, as the plant devotes a lot of energy to them. Note: This plant became famous thanks to the film Léon (1994) by Luc Besson, starring Jean Reno and Natalie Portman. Diseases and Pests: Red spider mites and mealybugs, and sometimes aphids. Species and Varieties: • A. crispum: Thick, leathery foliage, 30 cm long, gray-green. • A. crispum 'Silver Queen': Dark gray-green foliage, variegated with silver. • A. modestum: Wavy, glossy green leaves. • A. modestum 'Variegatum': Dark green foliage with yellow spots. • A. ‘Red dragon’ • A. nitidum 'Curtisii': Very long leaves (45 cm by 15 cm) v
