There's a move in chess called stalemate. It's a move that prevents the king from moving. The king isn't in check, but it can't move because all the positions within its reach are threatened. Stalemate means a draw. A tie. Experienced chess players try to get their opponent to stalemate them when they're about to lose the game. It's the last resort. Politics has quite a few similarities to chess, but the rules of chess don't govern politics. The latest move by Junts per Catalunya on the parliamentary chessboard threatens to stalemate Pedro Sánchez's government. The government wouldn't be in checkmate, since Junts doesn't want to support—for the moment—a motion of no confidence led by the People's Party and Vox, but it wouldn't be able to pass anything in Congress, as the seven members of parliament from the party led by Carles Puigdemont will block all the government's legislative initiatives, whatever they may be, by presenting amendments to the entirety of the bill.
