Don Blakeslee helped transform the P-51 Mustang into one of the most effective weapons used against the Luftwaffe during World War II. After taking command of the 4th Fighter Group in January 1944, Blakeslee pushed for the unit to replace its P-47 Thunderbolts with P-51 Mustangs.
