In 1864, a small party of prospectors followed a Pima guide through a zig-zag canyon passage in the New Mexico and Arizona border territory and found one of the richest placer gold deposits any of them had ever seen. Three days later, an Apache raid destroyed the camp. Most of the men died. One survivor ran south into open desert. He was Tomás Chávez, thirty years old, and he came out of that desert carrying nothing but his memory and a map he drew from it in a Tucson boarding house the same night. He would spend the next forty-eight years trying to walk back into that valley. This is the story of what the search cost him — his savings, his family, his reputation in every border town between Silver City and Tucson, and finally his body.
