PROGRAMMA GCAP : POSSIAMO STARE TRANQUILLI ?
GCAP, UK confirms funding and Tempest program resumes operations Italy can look with greater confidence to the future of the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), the project bringing together Italy, the United Kingdom, and Japan for the development of a sixth-generation fighter. In recent months, there had been considerable concern over British delays in finalizing new defense spending, a situation that had fueled doubts among partners about London's true commitment. At the end of June, the British government finally presented its new defense investment plan, confirming further funding for the modernization of the armed forces. The process has not been without tension: in early June, the Minister of Defense had resigned, deeming the allocated resources insufficient at a time marked by growing concerns for European security. The plan provides an additional £15 billion by 2029-2030 and includes several modernization programs, including £5 billion for drones and autonomous systems. However, some criticism remains from observers and military leaders, who would have preferred an even more substantial increase in the defense budget. For GCAP, the most important news, however, is the confirmation of £8.6 billion allocated to the program. This decision has unlocked a crucial phase of the work and reassured both Rome and Tokyo of the solidity of the industrial and political partnership. At the same time, collaboration with Edgewing, the industrial joint venture responsible for the program's development, is also continuing. A new contract worth more than €5 billion, with a duration of 18 months, will allow the planned activities to continue, representing the second major international agreement awarded by the GCAP Agency after the one signed in spring 2026. It now remains to be seen whether the program will attract new international partners, while Germany appears oriented towards alternative initiatives such as the TEAM GEN 6 project. #GCAP #Tempest #SixthGeneration #Defense #Aeronautics #Italy #UnitedKingdom #Japan #Leonardo #BAESystems #MitsubishiHeavyIndustries #Edgewing #GCAPAgency #Aerospace #DefenseIndustry #MilitaryNews #MilitaryAviation #StealthFighter #FutureFighter #EuropeanDefence #NATO #MilitaryTechnology #Geopolitics
