Artistic Map-making: reawakening our sense of place and planet | Molly Holmberg Brown | TEDxBoston

My talk will briefly review my work and how I got to where I am, why I make the kind of maps and artwork I do, and my experience running workshops for adults to make maps of the place or place that mean the most to them. How our stories about place and our love of these sites and landscapes has grown faint in our culture. Bringing this connection to the forefront of our minds fosters a vitality and rational for making particular choices for the future of our planet. Where do you care about? is a question that deserves more of our attention, because it engenders action and true stewardship. Molly is a visual artist, map-maker and geographer. She discovered geography at Middlebury College and went on to receive a Ph.D. in Human Geography from the University of Colorado, Boulder. She received a Watson Fellowship and a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship to explore the value of map-making for communities and individuals. Molly has worked in environmental and art education for organizations, universities and schools across the country. Her current projects involve map-making with children, conveying climate change through landscape painting, and custom maps for place-based organizations. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
