These rare archival recordings by Saxon director Jürgen Böttcher reveal the deadly precision of the Berlin Wall. Join us for a few minutes as we travel back to a divided Berlin, where concrete and barbed wire tore apart the daily lives of millions – and to the immediate aftermath of reunification. In 1961, construction began on the "anti-fascist protective barrier," which in reality imprisoned an entire city. While the world watched in disbelief as a major city was sealed off, the SED regime meticulously pursued the technical perfection of the border fortifications. These images now serve as harrowing testimonies to the death strip. Scene change: Spring 1990: Major Volker Fölbier, a member of the East German border troops, explains many details about the Berlin Wall in an almost businesslike manner: 29,000 elements of "Border Wall 75" enclosed West Berlin alone. Each segment was 3.60 meters high, reinforced with steel and concrete, and supplemented by vehicle barrier ditches, light barriers, and border signal fences. It was a highly fortified system designed to stop any escape attempt before it even began. But behind this military documentation lay the fates of 17 million East German citizens who were imprisoned on that bitter August night in 1961. While the SED leadership sought to justify the construction of the Wall with the "defense of peace," many people in East Germany suspected that this border would define their lives for decades to come...
