Hand-Pollinating Figs - This Will Change the Way We Grow Figs Forever

Diving into the process of caprifying or pollinating figs to enhance their flavors. Ross has been growing figs for almost ten years and only recently started pollinating them, which, he says, made a substantial difference in taste. He explains that the taste amplification occurs mostly in specific fig varieties when pollinated. Ross then demonstrates a hands-on process for pollinating figs. He starts by collecting pollen from caprifigs by shaking or tapping it out into a mug through a fine mesh strainer. He then mixes this pollen with water to create a pollen-water solution, which is absorbed into a syringe. The pollination process involves creating a hole in the side of the fig with a needle and injecting the pollen solution into the fruit, either through the eye or the side hole.
