STAR-DELTA STARTER Introduction The star-delta starter is an auxiliary motor starting device designed to reduce starting current. During startup (especially at full load), a motor can draw a current typically six to eight times its rated current to overcome inertia. To minimize this, several techniques can be used to reduce the starting current, one of which is reduced voltage starting, achieved by a temporary star connection of the motor. This system is used in motors with two voltage ratios (Y-Δ) and at least six terminals, with the lower voltage necessarily coinciding with the mains voltage. The motor is connected to the higher voltage (Y) at startup, applying the lower voltage (mains-Δ). After the motor has fully accelerated, the connections are reversed, and the motor is connected in delta, ensuring that the voltage received from the mains is the rated value.
