After morning services at the Benedictine monastery of St. Mauritius in Tholey, Saarland, Father Mauritius makes his way to the guesthouse next to the abbey. The small guesthouse is not only an important source of income for the monastery, but also, for Father Mauritius, his favorite pastime alongside his daily spiritual duties. The kitchen is his element. At the age of twenty, Father Mauritius was already a Michelin-starred chef. But he felt called to become a monk and entered the Benedictine abbey of St. Mauritius in Tholey. After studying theology in Switzerland, he was ordained a priest there. However, monastic life is increasingly bringing worries. The 46-year-old Father is responsible for the finances and economic survival of the monastery as cellarer. But the small abbey is in a difficult situation: It used to be home to 25 monks, but for many years there have been no new recruits. Now, about half of the remaining 13 monks are over seventy years old. The monastery cannot sustain itself for much longer.
