There are lines in the ocean that animals cannot cross. Sea lions are one of the most puzzling examples. Sea lions are found in every ocean of the world, except the North Atlantic. This is bizarre because the North Atlantic is ideal for sea lions. The temperature in the North Atlantic is perfect for sea lions. There’s an abundance of their preferred prey. Other pinnipeds like harbor seals thrive in these waters. But for some reason, sea lions have never been able to cross the tropical Atlantic. 00:00 - Lines in the Ocean Animals Will Not Cross 01:29 - The Wallace Line 04:03 - What Did Early Explores Eat? 06:11 - Does Continental Drift Explain Invisible Barriers in the Ocean? 07:42 - Ocean Temperatures Create Invisible Barriers 09:50 - Whales in the Atlantic and Pacific Never Meet 10:47 - Central American Seaway It's easy to look at the ocean and see it as one, big body of water where marine life roams freely. But that could not be further from the truth. In reality, “the ocean is a patchwork of diverse aquatic environments separated by marine barriers.” These barriers divide the ocean into 30 distinct biogeographic realms. An average of 42% of marine species are unique to a specific biogeographic realm, meaning they’re not found anywhere else in the world. Because of this, Europeans didn’t know sea lions even existed until the Age of Exploration when sailors started coming home with strange tales of weird creatures in far away lands. Scientists and naturalists, like Alfred Russel Wallace, joined these expeditions and began asking… “why are some animals found in some places but not others?” More specifically, “how and why does biological diversity vary over Earth's surface through space and time?” This became the central question to an emerging field of science known as biogeography or zoogeography. These biogeographic maps have a practical use for conservation planning, and reporting on ocean trends. Each biogeographic realm is unique and so each realm needs separate surveillance. And ideally, each unique realm should have a unique network of Marine Reserves to protect animals that aren’t found anywhere else in the world. Sources [1] https://nap.nationalacademies.org/rea...
