Deep in South Georgia sits one of the most architecturally ambitious mansions ever built in the state, a 23-room, three-story Neoclassical giant wrapped in 13 monumental Ionic columns. Built between 1898 and 1900 for lumber baron and U.S. Senator William Stanley West, The Crescent rose from the longleaf pine fortunes of the post-Reconstruction South and survived a brush with the wrecking ball that should have ended its story for good.
