Jai, the original founder of Modrinth, was looking to move on with his life. The responsibility of operating a business at the scale of Modrinth was becoming a conflict with his commitment to university and general personal life. It's important to highlight that Jai started Modrinth when he was 14, and has basically given his entire youth to the project until now. For Spark, when Jai first asked whether we'd be interested, we felt extremely privileged that he came to us. Jai was talking to many different companies, and we were his preferred option because he trusts our values and commitment to providing a good and fair working environment for his team while also ensuring that Modrinth stays true to it's mission and provides real impact and value to the community (both players and creators). These are ideas that we live and breath across Spark Universe. Jai actually turned down better financial offers than ours, because of the value alignment and trust in our team to do the right thing for Modrinth going forward. I think that's a testament to his care about the future of the project. Do you have any major changes you'd like to announce? Spark is not changing the trajectory or vision of Modrinth, so it's not my place to take credit for any new features. We are supporting Modrinth in the background, with our infrastructure and experience growing a business, team, and project. We are here to back up the team, not to impose what they are doing going forward. The biggest change that we are driving currently is employing everyone working on Modrinth, giving them stability and benefits. Do you have anything to say to the members of the community who are hesitant to trust your team, after looking at your other popular mod essentials and all the micro-transactions there? I completely understand any scepticism around Modrinth having new owners. We're going into this with the expectation that we have to proof ourselves to the community, and we will. On Essential's monetization, we simply offer an entirely optional cosmetic store in our mod. We don't believe our monetization is unfair, and it allows us to sustainably fund development and operate the services we provide to players. I reject the idea that we are being aggressive about microtransactions, we consciously chose against many more effective monetization strategies and let players disable cosmetics entirely if they are not interested. I also want to call out the big picture: Nearly 3 million people use Essential every month, and the vast majority like the mod for what it provides to them. We take feedback seriously and have made changes when concerns are reasonable, but it's also true that the criticism is amplified by misinformation and bad faith arguments, and doesn't reflect the experience of most users. What does this mean for the future of Modrinth?
