How Much Do 1-Month-Old Maine Coon Kittens Sleep?
It has been quite the week for Marmalade's litter! They took well to the start of their weaning and have gone from cats to piglets when it comes to feeding time. They have gained a significant amount of weight in the last week and their faces are really starting to fill out. They also started escaping from the bin, so we moved them to a larger enclosure. It really is insane how fast these kittens got their legs under them. They continue to nurse and sleep a lot, but they have also started to play and tussle as well. While sometimes it may seem like the play can be a little rough, it's a very important part of their socialization. They let out their adolescent aggression with their siblings so they are less likely to when they go to their fur-ever homes. They're slowly taking to their mush and they still nurse quite a bit. Some still get messy so we give them little baths. Again, when washing your cat (or other pet) it's important to avoid getting water in their ear. Wash from the neck down. If you want to wash their ears, use something like Pet MDs Advanced Ear Wipes. We've used them for a while and have had a very positive experience. Obviously if you use them and your pet has a reaction, stop using them. Bath time is also a a very important part of the socialization process. Cats are known for being very clean, but they can still get dirty. A good, simple bath once in a while is a big positive. Of course, their temperament when it comes to water can come from their parents. The kitten's eyes are still very blue, but it will change here soon. Kittens eyes will start out blue in color and change to gold or green. The only time you will have a Maine Coon with blue eyes is when it is an all-white Maine Coon. There are some breeders trying to introduce dominant blue eyes (DBE) into the breed and it is a detriment. If you ever see a dominant blue eye Maine Coon that isn't white, a lot of times the kitten will look somewhat off: eyes smaller, eyes distancing a little off, facial structure is abnormal. These are just some things that are noticeable with the DBE and there can be a lot of underlying issues as well. It is part of our commitment to stick to the written breed standard. There has even been a petition to limit DBE within TICA and its shows. Now that these kittens are a little bit older, they will start to have their photos taken weekly for updates so you can see them as they develop even more! Kylee is a professional photographer of over 10 years and she takes the cutest photos of all of our animals! The kittens have been doing well with their litter training. Pine pellets are a safer option for kittens to start out on. When they're kittens, they may mistake the clumping litter for food and eat it. If they eat it, they can get one nasty bowel obstruction and that is not good for their tiny little bodies. We will introduce them to clumping litter when they are significantly older so that they are trained to use both. We will even introduce them to use the clumping litter with a litter robot. Yet another part of our dedication to ethical breeding and raising these kittens properly and with the right socialization with modern products that help to handle their waste. Their eyes will also change some more, but it will be hard to tell what colors their eyes will be up until the next week, so make sure you subscribe to follow these kittens along on their journey to becoming some of the most amazing looking creatures on this planet!
