Sinn Féin had won a number of by-elections in 1917 but the Irish Parliamentary Party managed to reverse these defeats in early 1918. However, the conscription crisis and the German plot arrests would drive support away from moderate nationalism and towards Sinn Féin, especially after their candidate for the East Cavan by-election, Arthur Griffith, was swept up in the arrests.
