I liked the movie immensely and since the movie is 25 years old this year, I want to celebrate by introducing you to one of my favorite dance scenes “Ghanan Ghanan”. First a little background. The movie is set in 1893 during British colonial rule of India. Inhabitants of a small village are burdened by lagaan (lagaan means land tax) imposed by the British. Having suffered years of drought, the villages asked the British for relief from the heavy taxation. In an act of arrogance, the commanding British officer challenges the villagers to a game of cricket. If the villagers win, they don’t have to pay taxes for three years. If they lose, their taxes will be tripled. In a show of resistance to the British rule, the villagers accept the offer (but with some trepidation), and are given 3 months to build a team, make cricket bats and associated gear, and learn the game. The villagers ultimately win and the arrogant officer is transferred to a minor post in a remote location. Ghanan ghanan describes the deep rumpling sound of thunder and signifies the arrival of monsoon clouds and rain. In the Ghanan Ghanan dance scene, the villagers see incoming dark clouds and break into song and dance at the prospect of the end of the drought and the start of the monsoon season. The lyrics describe thundering clouds, pleas for rain, the arrival of the “pleasant season”, the greening of the land, and that joy will come to the people. The choreography and camera work is impressive. Watch as the camera pans, new groups of dancers will come into the frame perfectly synchronized with the dancers leaving the frame. Also look behind the primary dancers in the foreground. You will see multiple layers of dancers in the background, at least 2 or 3 layers and sometimes more.
