PIERROT LUNAIRE (Op. 21) - Arnold Schoenberg | Hard Rain SoloistEnsemble | Sarah Richmond

Arnold Schoenberg's dramatic and groundbreaking masterpiece Pierrot lunaire is a melodrama setting of 21 poems (3 x 7) by Albert Giraud. Drawing on Schoenberg's experience of Berlin's Uberbrettl literary cabaret, the piece features a 'reciter' (usually a soprano) accompanied by myriad combinations of flute, clarinet, violin, cello and piano, a combination which has subsequently come to be known as the Pierrot Quintet. For this performance the Hard Rain SoloistEnsemble, Northern Ireland's cutting edge contemporary music ensemble, are joined by fast rising star mezzo-soprano Sarah Richmond. Moonlight drunkenness, giant black nightmarish moths, grotesque waltzes, a moonfleck that just won't wash off, memories of happier times....each short movement is a masterclass in dramatic and musical mastery, as fresh today as it was at its premiere almost 111 years ago.
