Monsoon winds are blowing over Phuket, flood warnings are in effect, and plans need to be changed. I decide to use this weather for something completely different. Instead of beaches, I head to Nakert Hill – 400 meters up, 6 kilometers of serpentine roads, and a massive 45-meter Buddha that looks simultaneously to the east and west of the island. It was built by the locals themselves to protect them from the dark king of snakes – Naga. Two years ago, after rain as heavy as today, the slope beneath the statue collapsed. Thirteen people died. The temple was closed for a year and a half. In this episode, I take you to a world where the material intertwines with the invisible. I talk with a monk at Wat Chalong – Phuket's largest temple – about karma, death, and suffering. You'll discover with me that Theravada Buddhism is a religion WITHOUT God – no one created you here, and no one will judge you in the end. Judgment is self-enforced. Karma. We learn about the unusual customs of the monks: shaving their heads, learning 227 precepts, and only eating until 12:00 noon. And you can become a monk in Thailand… for a week. Or a month. Before marriage, after the death of a parent, or at the age of 20. And between all this, I pop into the iconic Pad Thai Shop – a place that looks like a garage, but has recipes passed down through generations. Pad Thai for 6 złoty, which I give 10/10, and Som Tam, which I consider the BEST of the entire trip. The secret? The way they cut green papaya and dried shrimp, which create a "3D flavor." The day begins and ends with monsoons. And I end it on Karon Beach, by the monumental statue of Naga – the king of snakes and ruler of all the elements. With one question: maybe this is how life is supposed to be?
