The Somme in Colour - Autumn 1916: The Final Push

This series commemorates the 110th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme — amongst the bloodiest campaigns of World War I and one of the defining episodes in British military history. Fought across the devastated landscapes of northern France in 1916, the offensive was launched in an attempt to break the deadlock on the Western Front, shatter entrenched German defences and relieve the immense pressure on French forces at the Battle of Verdun. Instead, the campaign became a prolonged war of attrition that resulted in more than one million casualties on both sides. In the final part of this three-part series, we examine the end phase of the offensive, during October and November, 1916. This series uses AI-assisted colourisation and enhancement of original First World War photographs to help visualise the conditions and experiences faced by the soldiers. The images are interpretive and intended for illustrative and educational purposes whilst striving for realism and accuracy. Some artistic license has been applied and the visuals should not be viewed as strictly archival representations. With thanks to the Imperial War Museum, whose annotated photographic archives provided much of the source material used in this production.
