Mount Reizan is a mountain we've been meaning to visit for a long time, but have never been able to. Whenever we've tried to go, the weather has always been bad, and the timing never quite worked out. I've also heard that it's a leech paradise during the summer. In the winter, it's a region prone to heavy snowfall, so it's not an easy climb. Every year, we've said, "We couldn't go to Mount Reizan this year either," and it feels like nearly 10 years have passed. To us, Mount Reizan has become a mystical mountain. It had become like a mountain that seemed far, far away. But this time, we remembered, and we decided to climb Mount Reizan, so we finally took action. It was early winter. We climbed Mount Reizan, with little snow and some lingering autumn foliage. A magnificent mountain with sharp rocks in a karst formation. It was an emotional climb, finally making it to the top. So, what is Mount Reizan's history? This mountain was also worshipped as a place of rainmaking, and was revered by the people as a mountain from which sacred water springs. After being defeated by the gods of Mt. Ibuki, Yamato Takeru is said to have recovered once by drinking the waters of Mt. Reisen. (However, he was unable to revive and lost his life.) There are various theories about the origin of the mountain's name. One theory is that it comes from the Heian period monk "Ryosen," who is said to have been from Omi Province. The monk "Ryosen" may be a little-known figure. Along with Kukai and Saicho, Reisen traveled to Tang China as a Japanese envoy. While Kukai and Saicho later returned to Japan, Reisen was not allowed to return. This is said to have been because the Tang emperor feared that Reisen's knowledge would leave the country. Later, Reisen, who mastered the Sutra, Vinaya, and Treatise, became known as "Tripitaka Priest," the highest honorific title for a monk. It seems that only eight people in the world have been given the title of Tripitaka Priest, and Reisen is the only Japanese to do so. If Reisen had returned to Japan, the history of Japanese religion might have been different. The scenery on this climb was even snowier than I expected. It is a mountain in a heavy snowfall region, as you would expect. I thought the karst rocks might make it difficult to see the footprints, but luckily there were traces. There was little wind on this day, so it was perfect weather for climbing. Mount Reisen is a famous mountain in Suzuka. When you actually climb it, you can see why it is such a popular mountain.
