The American Trick That Turned the M36 Jackson Into a King Tiger Killer in Just Seconds
The King Tiger was designed to be unkillable from the front. 185mm of turret armor. 150mm hull glacis at 50 degrees. No American tank gun could touch it at combat range — except one that was never built to fight tanks at all. The M36 Jackson's 90mm M3 gun began its life as an anti-aircraft weapon. The same muzzle velocity that let it reach aircraft at altitude gave it enough kinetic energy, loaded with a tungsten-core HVAP round, to defeat the heaviest German armor at the right angle and the right range. In the Ardennes in December 1944, M36 crews didn't fight King Tigers head-on. They picked ambush positions at 400 meters, waited for the angle that worked, and fired once before reversing behind terrain. The King Tiger's designers had armored against every gun they knew.
