The Ville Neighborhood in St. Louis

See Sumner High School- Designed by St. Louisan William Ittner and built in 1908- where Chuck Berry, Robert Guillaume, Tina Turner, Dick Gregory, Robert McFerrin Sr., Rosco Robinson Jr., Grace Bumbry, Arthur Ashe, all 3 male members of The 5th Dimension, Harold Wheeler, Wendell Pruitt, Julia Davis, George Brantley, and John Buckner all went. Sumner was the first high school for blacks west of the Mississippi River. It opened in downtown in 1875 and was the only black high school until Vashon in 1927. See the Annie Malone Children and Family Services Building, built in 1922 and designed by William Ittner. See the birthplace of Chuck Berry and the Homer G. Phillips Apartments, which was the only public hospital for blacks in 1937. At one time, it trained more black doctors and nurses than any other hospital in the country. See the James House Apartments, which was the site of Poro College- which Annie Malone founded in 1937. She was the first black millionaire and a parade is held in downtown St. Louis every year in her honor, which started in 1910. See many churches, the site where Sonny Liston lived in 1956- he became boxing world heavyweight champion in 1962, after knocking out Floyd Patterson. See St. Matthew the Apostle Catholic Church- where Father Walter Craig was from 1949-54. He started the first women's soccer league in 1950.
