Do Animals Experience Love?
What if animals don't just bond — what if they actually love? A dog named Capitan never visited the cemetery where his owner was buried. Nobody took him there. And yet the day after the funeral, he was gone. They found him sitting on the grave. He slept there every single night for eleven years. That's not a trick. That's not training. We don't have a clean explanation for it. And Capitan isn't alone. In this video we look at the science behind animal bonding, oxytocin, grief, loyalty, and what it would actually mean for another species to feel love — and why the answer is more complicated than most people think. Do animals feel emotions? Can animals love humans? These are questions science has been quietly wrestling with for decades — and the answers coming out of behavioural research, neuroscience, and zoology are harder to dismiss than most people expect. From elephants mourning their dead to crows bringing gifts to people who were kind to them, from dolphins supporting injured companions for days to chimpanzees adopting unrelated orphaned infants with no genetic reason to do so — the evidence keeps piling up. We just don't have a word big enough for what we're seeing. REFERENCES & FURTHER READING Oxytocin and animal bonding — Young, L.J. & Wang, Z. (2004). The neurobiology of pair bonding.
