This is a standard 200-liter barrel, with a powerful heating element and a tap for draining the water after steaming. You should try to cram as many straw bags into the barrel as possible, but not so much that they're too thick, as the water should cover the straw during the steaming process. I tamp the bags down with my feet before putting them in the barrel. This saves water and electricity. I usually left the steamed barrel overnight with the insulation removed and drained the water in the morning, as during this time the water heated my room and cooled down. Incidentally, this is exactly what we started with, in winter. So, in cold weather, you can steam the substrate indoors (in a barn or basement). You can also steam logs in this same barrel without having to replace the water with fresh water.
