Escaping the Friend Zone and Turning Relationships Into Real Clients
In this episode of BE THAT LAWYER, I sit down with Lauren Paxton, former federal prosecutor, Chambers-ranked law firm partner, and now executive coach working exclusively with lawyers and law firms. Lauren came out of government 10 years into her career with no book of business. Zero. She had to figure out business development from scratch, mid-career, while also running an employment practice at a well-respected New York area firm. That experience gives her something most coaches do not have: she has actually done the thing she teaches, and she knows exactly what it feels like to start from nothing. By the time lawyers find Lauren, they are not usually looking for tactics. They have tried things. Nothing is sticking. The real problem is usually mindset, a version of themselves that does not quite believe this is something they can do or should have to do. That is where she starts. We cover a lot of ground in this conversation. The neuroscience behind why BD feels so hard when you are already maxed out. Why "I do everything" makes you forgettable and how a specific, curiosity-driven description of what you are working on right now makes you memorable. How to think about the three targets that actually matter: prospective clients, strategic partners, and the people already in your world who have never been properly asked to help. We also get into one of my favorite topics, the friend zone. When you have been going to the same conference for years, making great connections with GCs and CEOs, and not one of them has sent you work, something has gone wrong. Lauren's take on how to turn that corner without making things weird or salesy is genuinely useful. And we close with her big mistake, which turns out to be something a lot of high-performing lawyers fall into: applying the same "just try harder" mentality that got them through late nights in practice to a business development approach that is clearly not working. The answer is not more effort. It is a different perspective. What You Will Learn in This Episode: Why the biggest BD obstacle for most lawyers is not a skills gap but a mindset gap, and how to address it How to describe what you do in a way that makes people think of you immediately when the right matter comes up What the friend zone looks like and how to move from trusted connection to actual client without making it awkward Why working backward from your long-term career vision changes what you do today in business development How to build BD into a daily habit so it stops feeling like a separate chore on top of everything else If you are a lawyer who has been trying to build a book of business but keeps running into the same walls, this episode will give you a different lens for what is actually going on and what to do about it.
