In Gapyeong, Gyeonggi-do, there is a special wildflower garden hidden within nature. It is said that as many as 50,000 frogs live here. These are works created one by one over the past 20 years as a hobby by Grandpa Namgung Young, who has been sculpting frogs out of pottery. He bought a small kiln to make flowerpots because his wife loves flowers, but while wondering what to do during the off-season, he started making them because frogs, which are commonly seen in the countryside, symbolize good luck, fortune, and fertility. He carefully displays them throughout the wildflower garden tended by his wife, Grandma Choi Gwang-ja, and before long, it has become a small kingdom of frogs. - In Geoje, there is a garden densely packed with super-sized stone sculptures reaching up to 10 meters in height. Mr. Lee Seong-bo, who began collecting stones after becoming captivated by a rare ornamental stone he saw by chance while working in Seoul during his youth, says that the stones he collected amounted to a whopping 200 five-ton trucks when he arrived in his hometown of Geoje 30 years ago. Mr. Seong-bo said he wanted to create his own garden in his hometown using the stones he had collected over the years. The colossal stone garden, created by attaching orchids or flowers to the stones he collected, is the masterpiece of his life, cultivated through 57 years of side projects. These individuals, who started as a hobby and created a one-of-a-kind garden in Korea because they felt it was too beautiful to keep to themselves!
