What is the EFOMM exam? The exam is part of the Selection Process for Admission to the Merchant Marine Officer Training Schools (EFOMM) and includes the Knowledge Exam, an objective test with questions in Portuguese, English, Mathematics, and Physics. It is one of the most competitive exams in the military and maritime field, as it opens the way to a career as a Merchant Marine Officer, with broad national and international scope. 🎓 What is the training like for a Merchant Marine Officer? EFOMM training takes place at two Brazilian Navy institutions: ⚓ CIAGA – Admiral Graça Aranha Instruction Center (Rio de Janeiro): In Rio de Janeiro, it is one of the main maritime training schools in the country. It is responsible for preparing future officers to work in Nautical or Engineering, with a complete structure that includes navigation simulation rooms, engineering laboratories, etc. Students live in a boarding school regime, follow a military routine, participate in physical, maritime, and military instruction, and have a strong academic foundation focused on life at sea. ⚓ CIABA – Admiral Braz de Aguiar Instruction Center (Belém – PA): Located in Belém, Pará, it is the equivalent of CIAGA for the Northern region. It trains the same officers, focusing on the areas of Nautical and Machinery, preparing students to work on large vessels. CIABA is recognized for its tradition, with military routines and specific training in navigation, naval engineering, maneuvers, and maritime operations. 👉🏻How the EsPCEx entrance exam works: The main stage of the public entrance exam is the objective test. In the case of the Prep exam, it is divided into two days (first day: Portuguese, Physics, Chemistry, and Essay; second day: Mathematics, History, Geography, and English). Candidates who pass the objective test advance to the next stages. These are not classificatory, only eliminatory (physical aptitude test, health inspection, etc.). 📎After passing the written exam, the candidate undergoes: Health Inspection (IS) – medical and laboratory exams to verify physical conditions. Physical Aptitude Test (EAF / TAF) – tests such as a 12-minute run, push-ups, sit-ups, and pull-ups. Psychological Evaluation (Avl Psc) – verification of the candidate's psychological profile. 👮🏻‍♂️How is the training of a combat officer? 📍 EsPCEx (Campinas/SP) – 1 year The approved student is called an EsPCEx student. They live in a military boarding school regime, with strict discipline and an intense routine. They study civilian subjects (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Humanities) and military subjects (drill, leadership, field instruction). Objective: to provide an academic foundation and adaptation to military life. 📍 AMAN (Agulhas Negras Military Academy – Resende/RJ) – 4 years The student is promoted to cadet. Training divided into: Basic (1st year): adaptation, physical strengthening and military discipline. 2nd year: choice of Arm, Branch or Service. 3rd and 4th years: EDL, EPCT, TCC, etc. At the end, receives the title of Bachelor of Military Sciences and is declared an Officer Candidate. 📈Career after graduation: The officer candidate is assigned to a military organization in Brazil.
