This piece, rooted in Algerian Saharan heritage, is not just a song. It is a living memory. A sound archive born in the dunes, where silence has weight and every voice seems to converse with the horizon. The story began with an unexpected encounter. During a journey deep in the Algerian Sahara, far from cities and roads, I met a group of artists. No stage, no signs, no lights—just an invitation: to join a night in the middle of the dunes for an artistic gathering. Night fell silently. The fire became the center. Faces emerged in its flickering light. Then the voice rose: “Ya Salam… life was a rose in the old days…” The phrase repeats. Not as a stylistic choice, but as cultural necessity. In Saharan tradition, repetition creates a state, opens an inner space, and transforms listening into experience. I recorded this piece in 2011. The goal was not production, not commercial. It was to preserve a pure moment of Saharan sound culture before it could fade into the wind or the passing of time. The song does more than evoke nostalgia. It mentions specific years: 2007, 2008. It refers to “the time of progress,” the satellite dishes, international channels. The outside world entering a traditionally oral space. In this context, Ya Salam becomes a social document. It does not condemn modernity; it observes it. It does not glorify the past blindly; it questions it. Perhaps the “rose of the old days” was not more beautiful, But it was closer. Musically, the structure is minimal. The voice dominates. The rhythm follows the breath of the desert. The surrounding silence becomes part of the composition. Here, the Sahara is not a backdrop—it is an instrument. This piece captures a transitional moment: Between the tent and the satellite. Between the traditional gathering and global broadcasting. Between oral memory and digital archiving. Every listening revives the journey. It does not just reproduce the melody—it restores the atmosphere, the temperature, the vibration found only in this place. In a world saturated with images and constant flows of information, Ya Salam reminds us: Progress shortens geographical distances, but can expand human distances. This Saharan chant is not frozen in the past. It is testimony to the moment the desert met modernity, and memory chose to sing before it disappeared. More than a song, Ya Salam is a trace. And in the desert, every trace deserves to be heard before the wind buries it. ⸻ ياسلام قصة أغنية ولدت في قلب الصحراء الجزائرية هناك موسيقى نستمع إليها، وأخرى نعيشها ونتجاوزها. ياسلام تنتمي للفئة الثانية. هذا المقطع الموسيقي، المنبثق من التراث الصحراوي الجزائري، ليس مجرد أغنية. إنه ذاكرة حية. أرشيف صوتي ولد في قلب الكثبان، حيث يمتلك الصمت كثافة شبه ملموسة، وحيث تبدو كل صوتية وكأنها تتحدث مع الأفق اللامتناهي. بدأت القصة بلقاء غير متوقع. خلال رحلة في عمق الصحراء الجزائرية، بعيداً عن المدن والمسارات المعروفة، التقيت بمجموعة من الفنانين. لا مسرح، لا لافتات، لا إضاءة، مجرد دعوة: الانضمام إلى سهرة فنية بين الكثبان. حلّ الليل بلا صوت، وأصبح النار محور المكان، وتجلت الوجوه في ضوءها المتذبذب. ثم ارتفعت الصوت: «يا سلام… كانت الحياة وردة في قديم الزمن…» تتكرر العبارة. ليس تأثيراً فنياً، بل ضرورة ثقافية. في التراث الصحراوي، التكرار يخلق حالة، يفتح مساحة داخلية، ويحوّل الاستماع إلى تجربة حية. وقد قمت بتسجيل هذا المقطع في 2011. لم يكن الهدف إنتاجاً فنياً أو تجارياً، بل الحفاظ على لحظة صافية من الثقافة الصوتية الصحراوية قبل أن يبتلعها الزمن أو الريح. لكن المقطع لا يقتصر على الحنين للماضي. فهو يذكر سنوات محددة: 2007، 2008. يشير إلى “زمن التقدم”، البرابول، القنوات الدولية، ودخول العالم الخارجي إلى الفضاء الحميم للصحراء. ياسلام إذن أصبح وثيقة اجتماعية. لا يدين الحداثة، بل يوثقها. ولا يمجد الماضي بسذاجة، بل يطرحه للتأمل. ربما لم تكن “الوردة القديمة” أجمل، لكنها كانت أقرب. من الناحية الموسيقية، البنية بسيطة. الصوت المسيطر. الإيقاع يتماشى مع تنفس الصحراء. الصمت المحيط يصبح جزءاً من التكوين. هنا، الصحراء ليست مجرد خلفية، بل آلة موسيقية طبيعية. هذا المقطع يوثق لحظة انتقالية: بين الخيمة والبرابول، بين السهرة التقليدية والبث الفضائي، بين الذاكرة الشفوية والأرشيف الرقمي. كل استماع يعيدنا إلى تلك الرحلة. لا يعيد فقط اللحن، بل الجو، الحرارة، والاهتزاز الذي لا يمكن العثور عليه إلا هنا. في عالم مشبع بالصور والتدفق المستمر للمعلومات، ياسلام يذكّر بحقيقة أساسية: التقدم يقصر المسافات الجغرافية، لكنه قد يوسع المسافات الإنسانية. هذا النشيد الصحراوي ليس محصوراً في الماضي، إنه شهادة على لحظة التقاء الصحراء بالحداثة، وعلى اختيار الذاكرة أن تغني قبل أن تُمحى. أكثر من مجرد أغنية، ياسلام أثر. وفي الصحراء، كل أثر يستحق أن يُسمع قبل أن يبتلعه الريح.
