Cataract is defined as opacification of the crystalline lens leading to progressive visual impairment. The lecture explains normal lens anatomy, its avascular nature, lens fibers, capsule and protein arrangement, and how disruption of transparency results in light scattering and reduced visual acuity. The session then classifies cataracts based on location within the lens, including nuclear cataract, cortical cataract and posterior subcapsular cataract. Nuclear cataract is explained in relation to aging and lens sclerosis, cortical cataract is discussed with its characteristic spoke-like opacities, and posterior subcapsular cataract is correlated with steroid use, diabetes and rapid vision loss affecting near vision ๐๐๏ธ. High-yield clinical features such as glare, halos and myopic shift are integrated for better exam recall. Cataracts are also classified based on structural and morphological patterns, including lamellar, sutural, membranous and traumatic cataracts. Congenital cataracts are introduced briefly with emphasis on metabolic and genetic associations. The mechanism of protein denaturation, osmotic changes and oxidative stress leading to lens opacity is explained in simple, concept-based language to strengthen understanding rather than rote memorization. This lecture lays the foundation for further discussion on causes, grading systems, clinical evaluation and management in upcoming parts. It covers all essential high-yield points required for MBBS, NEET-PG, FMGE, INI-CET, NEXT and USMLE examinations. #Cataract #Ophthalmology #LensOpacity #NuclearCataract #CorticalCataract #PosteriorSubcapsularCataract #CongenitalCataract #TraumaticCataract #VisualImpairment #EyeDiseases #MedicalEducation #MBBS #NEETPG #FMGE #USMLE #USMLEStep1 #INICET #NEXTExam #RapidRevision #HighYield #BoardExamPrep #MedicalStudents #IMG #ClinicalConcepts
