Creating Total Scores in SPSS
In psychology and other social science fields, when you collect multiple responses on a Likert-type scale or other questions that need to be combined into a single score, one method is to create a sum (total score). You should use the scale as intended based on the literature. This video addresses two technique using the menu in SPSS and when you would choose to use different options depending on how you want to manage missing responses. I also briefly discuss syntax.
