SANDY & LUNA EVENING IN BASEMENT! SANDY'S ACROBATIC MOVE & FLIGHT! LUNA FOLLOWS! 💖 FOBBVCAM 7.14.26

Last evening 7/13, it was a special time to see both Sandy & Luna in the basement of the nest tree. Sandy was on the higher branch, Luna on a lower branch. Closeups of Luna show him busy tearing off pieces of a stick and holding in with talons - all important skills to learn holding and eating prey on a branch. Luna will fly off to the Simba Tree to roost overnight. Sandy stays in the basement. In the morning of 7/14 - Luna will fly back to the basement and join Sandy ♥ Sandy begins to vocalize -she might have seen a parent flying in the distance - she turns around and looks to change branches but has a misstep and ends up flying downward and then off to Twin Pines. Luna follows her bestie and they both perch on TP. Sandy will fly off & go to Lookout Snag. After several minutes, Luna joins Sandy on LS. Sandy will fly off first and Luna will follow as they begin their day! We are fortunate to have Cam 2 to show all the trees that Sandy & Luna fly to and perch in during their daily adventures! During the next few weeks and months, Sandy & Luna will learn to hunt by trial & error, guided by instinct. During this time, they primarily scavenge & steal from others (kleptoparasitism) while developing flight skills needed to catch live prey. Juvenile eagles are nomadic until they reach maturity. They will generally leave the natal area by fall and may travel over 1,000 miles. We don't generally get to see Shadow & Jackie much over the summer months after their kids disperse, but they remain here in Big Bear and will continue to hunt and fish and perch in the trees. We might get lucky to see them bring an occasional stick to the nest or bring a fish in to enjoy!
