Dolphy’s presence in 1961 added sharp, angular textures — his bass clarinet and alto sax pushed Coltrane into freer territory. By 1963, Coltrane’s quartet was more settled, but the seeds of A Love Supreme were already there. So “Conceptions” is essentially a retrospective live collection, not an original studio album, but it captures Coltrane in two very different phases: the experimental fire of ’61 with Dolphy, and the deepening spiritual focus of ’63.
