Afro Blue – 6:43 2. Naima – 4:05 3. The Promise – 7:24 4. Everytime We Say Goodbye – 6:01 5. Impressions – 7:22 6. Blue Train – 9:02 7. The Inch Worm – 12:36 Likely Year Breakdown 1961 (with Eric Dolphy) Impressions (7:22) The Inch Worm (12:36) Possibly Afro Blue (6:43) 1963 (classic quartet, no Dolphy) Naima (4:05) The Promise (7:24) Everytime We Say Goodbye (6:01) Blue Train (9:02) Possibly Afro Blue (6:43) The fact that this compilation spans 1961 (Village Vanguard era with Eric Dolphy) and 1963 (transition toward his spiritual peak) makes it fascinating. Dolphy’s presence in 1961 added sharp, angular textures — his bass clarinet and alto sax pushed Coltrane into freer territory. By 1963, Coltrane’s quartet was more settled, but the seeds of A Love Supreme were already there. So “Conceptions” is essentially a retrospective live collection, not an original studio album, but it captures Coltrane in two very different phases: the experimental fire of ’61 with Dolphy, and the deepening spiritual focus of ’63.
