Why A.I. Makes Mass Surveillance More Dangerous

Cindy Cohn has spent three decades fighting for online privacy and digital rights. "In the '90s, we didn’t anticipate that spying on everybody would become the number one business model of the internet," she said during Hard Fork's recent live event in San Francisco. Cohn is the former executive director of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (E.F.F.) and the author of "Privacy's Defender: My Thirty-Year Fight Against Digital Surveillance." She spoke to Kevin Roose and Casey Newton, the hosts of Hard Fork, about the current state of mass surveillance, the disconnect between tech platforms and their users, and the risks of A.I. systems on privacy. She also explained why she's not done fighting. 0:00 Introducing Cindy Cohn 1:22 The ongoing fight for end-to-end encryption 3:10 E.F.F.’s shift to fighting Big Tech 6:10 How the ideologies of tech companies have evolved 9:23 The risks of A.I. on privacy 11:15 Why does A.I. make mass surveillance scarier? 14:19 Immigration and the surveillance state 15:40 Is privacy still a winnable fight? 18:16 The complexities of chatbot privilege 19:52 Why E.F.F. left X.com Hard Fork is a weekly look into the future that's already here.
