(15 Feb 1986) SP17028603 NEW ZEALAND YACHTING Round the World race. Simon Le Bon departs on Drum for 3rd leg to Uruguay. The English pop star, Simon Le Bon, lead singer with Arcadia and Duran Duran, joined his yacht Drum on Saturday (15/2) for the start of the third leg of the Whitbread Round-the-World yacht race from Auckland, New Zealand. Fifteen yachts are competing in the race, and expect to arrive in Uruguay on about March 9, after sailing around Cape Horn. The last leg, in April, will be back to Plymouth. After the first two legs of the race, Portsmouth to Cape Town, and Cape Town to Auckland, Drum - without Le Bon on board - was lying fifth on real time. In an earlier race, off the south coast of England last summer, Drum overturned, with Le Bon trapped inside. All the same, he's joined the vessel for the toughest leg, in sailing terms, around Cape Horn, and possibly for the last leg home. His new wife, scores of weeping teenage girls, a Maori grass-skirt choir, and literally hundreds of small boats were at Auckland harbour to say goodbye to Le Bon, Drum and the other yachts.
