The Suicide Coil Rule That Was Never Finished
A steel coil can weigh more than forty thousand pounds, but its weight is only half the danger. Unlike ordinary freight, the load is shaped like a wheel—and one common orientation points that wheel directly toward the truck’s cab. Federal coil-securement rules were designed around the brutal physics of hard braking, rolling cargo and chains that can look secure while doing almost nothing. One especially convincing X-shaped chain pattern is forbidden on a suicide coil because it fails to restrain the movement that matters most. Railroads confronted the same problem decades before highway regulators, yet serious coil accidents continued after the trucking standard became mandatory. More than twenty years later, part of the federal rule remains covered by a temporary exemption because one loading configuration was inadvertently left out. --------- We do not fully own the material compiled in this video.
