Driving from Unterwössen to Reit im Winkl, Germany 😍

#OnTheRoad History of the municipality of Unterwössen The first traces of settlement in Unterwössen date back to the Hallstatt period (8th century BC). The municipality was formed during the Carolingian period (around 800) around a first wooden church. The first documented mention follows in 1120. The “Kroatensteig” (Croatian Trail), which still exists today, is a reminder of the damaging raids by the Pandurs during the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748). Finds of fool's gold (pyrite) on the Hochkienberg triggered a “gold rush” in the village between 1849 and 1857. The construction of the railway to Marquartstein in 1884 brought the first summer visitors and artists to the village. In 1932, Lake Wössner was created as part of dam construction work in the hamlet of Rexau. Since 1972, Oberwössen has belonged to the village of Unterwössen, thus forming a single municipality. Reit im Winkl is a well-known climatic health resort and a popular mountain and ski village in the Bavarian Alps, south of Lake Chiemsee, near the Austrian border.
