ADYGHE (WEST CIRCASSIAN) LANGUAGE, PEOPLE, & CULTURE
Welcome to my channel! This is Andy from I love languages. Let's learn different languages/dialects together. Sèlam, sè scIèr Èndi. Š″yd š″uik″èbar? Hello! My name is Andy. How are you? Let's talk about the Adyghe language. Adyghe Language (Adygabze): Adyghe, or West Circassian, is a Northwest Caucasian language spoken primarily by the western Circassian subgroups. It is mainly used in Russia’s Republic of Adygea, as well as in diaspora communities in Turkey, Jordan, Syria, and Israel, where Circassians resettled after the Russian-Circassian War (1763–1864). Adyghe is closely related to Kabardian (East Circassian), and while some linguists consider them separate languages, others view them as dialects of a unified Circassian language. The language features a complex phonetic system with numerous consonants and few vowels, along with a rich oral tradition preserved through epic tales, songs, and proverbs. Circassian People and Culture: The Circassians (Adyghe) are an ancient ethnic group native to the Northwest Caucasus, known for their rich traditions, warrior ethos, and deep ties to nature. Their culture emphasizes Adyghe Xabze, a strict moral-ethical code governing honor, hospitality, and respect. A unique tradition is the rain-calling ritual Hantceguashe, performed during droughts. Participants carried a ritual doll through the village, praying at sacred sites—such as lightning-strike graves—while singing ceremonial songs and dousing themselves with water to invoke rain. Other key cultural elements include elaborate folk dances like the Zhigatlet, epic Nart sagas, and a history of craftsmanship in weaponry and textiles. Despite displacement and assimilation pressures, Circassians globally strive to preserve their heritage. This video is created for educational, language awareness, and language preservation purposes. It aims to provide valuable insights and knowledge to viewers, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of different languages and their unique characteristics. By raising awareness about linguistic diversity, the video seeks to foster a greater respect and recognition for various languages, particularly those that are endangered or underrepresented. Additionally, it contributes to the preservation of languages by documenting and sharing linguistic knowledge, thus ensuring that these languages and their cultural heritage are not lost to future generations.
