The End Of July Is ESCALATING Quickly
Tropical Storm Bertha is moving across the northern Gulf Coast, but that is only one part of a very active weather pattern unfolding across the United States. In this video, I break down the latest track and expected impacts from Bertha as the storm moves from Louisiana toward Galveston, Houston, and the Texas Gulf Coast. Strong wind shear continues to keep the system disorganized, but squally weather, gusty winds, and periods of heavy rain will remain possible along its path. The bigger concern may be a slow-moving cold front stalling across the Southeast. Tropical moisture feeding into this boundary could produce repeated rounds of thunderstorms, excessive rainfall, and localized flash flooding. Parts of North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and the Delmarva region could receive several inches of rain, with isolated double-digit totals possible where storms repeatedly track over the same locations. I compare the latest European, GFS, HRRR, and Rapid Refresh model guidance to show where the heaviest rainfall may develop and how quickly the front could move south. This rain could provide meaningful drought relief, but too much rain falling too quickly may create dangerous flooding problems. I also cover the continuing monsoon rainfall and flash-flood threat across the West, wildfire smoke in the Pacific Northwest, dangerous heat in the southern Plains and Desert Southwest, and a temporary taste of fall across parts of the Great Lakes and Northeast. The cooler pattern will not last forever, as summer heat is expected to expand eastward again. Please remember that forecasts can change as new information becomes available.
