Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) Runway Extension Project The runway will be extended by 300-metre, alongside rehabilitation of the apron and taxiways,, as part of a PAC Kingston Airport Limited (PACKAL) investment to upgrade the facility. The project will enhance safety for aircraft operations and improve emergency response capabilities. These upgrades aim to facilitate larger Mandatory Safety Compliance runway end safety area (RESAs): The primary goal is to install runway end safety area (RESAs) at the end of the runways to meet International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards. This follows a 2009 incident where an American Airlines Boeing 737 overshot the runway. Strategic Goal Minister Vaz highlighted that the expansion is critical to enhancing the airport's capacity, safety, and efficiency to meet growing air-travel demand. The extension is crucial for attracting bigger planes and boosting tourism and business, aligning with the goal of turning Kingston into a regional logistics hub.
